Security Tip of the Month

Copper Wire Theft

The theft of any item made of copper such as tubing and wiring is increasing at an alarming rate. The value of the copper is dramatically higher and buildings, especially vacant buildings, have become attractive targets for thieves. The theft of copper from buildings can cause significant damage to the building greater than the value of the copper.

Companies need to protect their buildings with such electronic security devices such as portable motion and sound detectors, infrared beam systems, security officers or security patrols. If the building has an alarm system, it may be prudent to keep it in operation even though the building is not in use. With proper electronic security equipment, thieves will quickly find that your building is not one they can target and will move on to buildings with no security equipment.

It is important that if an alarm does go off in your vacant building that you have an active response, either from the police, a security supplier, or an employee. If one of your employees responds, make sure they are aware of the proper way to observe what is going on and how to report it to law enforcement personnel.
